5 Simple Secrets to Apple’s Amazing iPhone Apps

Can we explain why this is the case? Is it possible to analyze some of the decisions Apple made that put them in this place, ensuring their serious dominance when it comes to the ‘best’ smartphone (even if they don’t have all the market share yet)? It seems like no one can pull off any reasonable level of competition so far (except for the great try that is the Palm Pre). Here are 5 specific reasons as to why this happened.

#5: Apple’s road map is seriously good

You’ve got some software and hardware makers who change up their plans every few months, and bombard the market with more phone models than is ever necessary. Apple didn’t do this — they just made the one phone, worked insanely hard on making it really good, and haven’t deviated from that plan so far.

#4: Developers, Developers, Developers!

There are loads of great developers out there doing work for the mac, and they know all about good design. Apple’s SDKs have always been extremely high-quality, and this fosters great quality in their developers, too. Naturally, this was their approach with the iPhone, and it has seriously paid off.

#3: No other OS comes close to that of the iPhone

This was actually the simplest, most obvious move of all: if you make the phone, and only make one of them, you can make the OS, too. Unlike all those other phone OS’es (including Google Android) that are supposed to run on dozens, if not hundreds of phones, the iPhone’s is perfectly designed to take advantage of that hardware, and the apps see an amazing jump in quality.

#2: Apple always likes a fight

People still make a lot of crazy predictions about how this or that Apple product will fail, and the iPhone was seen as the biggest gamble (and potential disaster) of them all. When it came to the app store, things were even more grim — until it surpassed a billion downloads and everyone just kinda shut up and said “wow.”

#1: From Steve Jobs on down, high standards are crucial

Because Apple worked so hard on their operating system, phone hardware, and built-in applications, those standards are passed down to the developers. If there’s one ‘very simple reason’ why so many of those applications in the app store are so good, it’s this — rigorous standards at the top lead to high quality, all the way down the line.
